Ruck.in

www.ruck.in is a project that came to me while I was in bed one night. Like all good ideas they seem to arise at times when they provide a useful distraction for more important things; in this case my final year university exams!

My original idea was an opinionated rugby website, which doesn't just reproduce the other news items but is more 'opinionated' and with original articles. This doesn't sound so revolutionary by itself but I had ideas of combining web 2.0 technologies, such as social content (users submitting their own articles, but being approved/voted on).

I also wanted a video section, where all rugby clips, highlights and possibly (with a bit of law dodging) full matches could be posted for viewing/download. For me there isn't one definitive place where I can get all my rugby video needs, and youtube is crap for it.

None of what has been mentioned so far has even been 'mocked up'. Instead I started working on what I thought would be a small little section of the website - "latest news". This would simply aggregate all the usual rugby sources' news stories, and was easy enough to code in my spare time while I was meant to be revising for my finals. However, as I was coding this 'simple' section I started having loads of ideas of making it more powerful, and linking in web 2.0 services like twitter.

I envisioned a "one stop shop" for your rugby news, where all your favorite feeds would be listed. Where you could easily see which ones were read and unread. Where you could easily share these news stories with your friends on twitter or by email, and where you can comment and have debates about these stories with other users.

For now, this is what www.ruck.in will be, as well as some other small features. If you want to keep up to date with the development of ruck.in I suggest you follow the twitter user ruckdotin
