Derren Brown - The Events (Starting 09/09/09 9:00 PM) - My Thoughts - Part 1

The amazing Derren Brown is going to be back on our screens soon. Anyone who watches C4 or any of their sibling channels will have probably seen some of the little clips of him in the ad breaks, as well as the full length trailer (below). All of the clips are reversed, or have reversed elements, and seemingly don't give much if any information on what his new show is about - or do they?

Here's the reversed version, which decodes what Derren is actually saying (although there's still some things going backwards, as there are some things in the original ad that were going forwards - confusing!)

The Events will be a four one-hour episodes broadcast live from a theater as well as combining some pre-recorded material, with the climax of each show leading up to an amazing "stunt", or as Derren himself says "some of the most incredible feats to date".

From the videos above, it would appear Derren has left us some clues. The main one's being:

  • Backwards - An over riding theme of all the adverts, and even the competition - which may or may not actually be a "Trick" (he speaks strangely in the video, highlighting the word trick)
  • stucktomysofa.com website/pizza advert at the bus stop.
  • MachesterUnited.com billboard (which is actually retsehcnaMdetinU.com - not properly reversed).
  • Lots of red and black is used (billboard, black suit, red and black cars, red phone boxes, red girl's baloon) - and also on the lorry that hits derren at the end (or start on the original).
  • Lottery references (on the bus, as well as numbers on the lamp post by the crossing). In fact the bus says "It will be you" rather than "Will it be you"...
  • Derren says "even the most simple tricks can make the most secure systems vulnerable" - where he then looks at the girl with the balloon with a strange logo on it.
  • And finally, the date the show airs (09/09/09) which stays the same when reversed...

In part 2 of this 'Derren Brown' special blog post, I'll delve deeper into all of these clues and will provide my predictions of what might be in store for the new show!
